When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Culture is set less by values statements than by what people with authority tolerate, notice and reward, and in public service that is where belonging is won or lost. The first half explores inclusive leadership and allyship, drawing on David Morrison, Scott Page's diversity bonus, Deloitte's six signature traits, the 5Ds of bystander intervention and the Welsh Rugby Union review. The second turns to trust, safety and strong cultures, with Edmondson's three moves, Coyle's belonging cues, Sutton on the cost of one difficult senior person, and Pixar's Braintrust set against Bridgewater's radical transparency, ending with a three question safety audit.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain why presence is not inclusion, using the diversity bonus, Deloitte's six signature traits and peer-reviewed evidence on inclusive climates and psychological safety.
  2. Explain what psychological safety is and is not, and how it combines with high standards to create a learning zone.
  3. Use the 5Ds of bystander intervention and the impact and repair approach to respond to everyday slights, recognising when formal procedures are needed.
  4. Apply Edmondson's three moves and Coyle's three skills to build safety and belonging in your own team.
  5. Assess how safe it is to speak up in your organisation and which systems would make inclusive practice last beyond any individual leader.
  6. Use a three question safety audit to assess your team, taking account of the bystander effect and the unequal costs of speaking up.

The Modules.

1 hour 30 minutes of learning.

  1. 15Inclusive Leadership, Allyship and CultureCulture is set less by values statements than by what people with authority tolerate, notice and reward. This module draws on David Morrison, Scott Page's diversity bonus, Deloitte's six signature traits, and peer-reviewed work by Randel, Nishii and Edmondson. It treats allyship as action, using the 5Ds of bystander intervention, offers an impact and repair approach to the microaggressions debate, and learns from the Welsh Rugby Union review.41 min
  2. 08Trust, Safety and Strong CulturesPsychological safety is not comfort; it is whether bad news can travel while there is still time to act. This module draws on Edmondson's three moves, Coyle's three skills and belonging cues, a standards and safety matrix, Sutton on the cost of one difficult senior person, and Darley and Latane's bystander effect. Pixar's Braintrust and Bridgewater's radical transparency are contrasted, and a three question safety audit follows.41 min
