When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Content Note.

This topic is about mental health at work. Part 3, Safe to Speak, Safe to Seek Help, talks about suicide and how to respond when someone is in crisis. It follows the Samaritans' guidance on talking about suicide safely and gives no detail of methods. Take it at your own pace, pause whenever you need to, and come back to it later if that helps.

If you need to talk to someone now, call Samaritans free on 116 123, any time, day or night. For urgent mental health help, call NHS 111 (in Wales press 2, in England choose option 2; in Scotland NHS 24 is also on 111). In Northern Ireland, call Lifeline on 0808 808 8000. If a life is at risk, call 999.

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers and team leaders in public and voluntary sector bodies

Overview

Under pressure, people must feel heard before they will move, and that includes the colleague who is quietly struggling. Completing the Immerse The conversations we put off, this half day begins with Chris Voss's tactical empathy and with negotiating across culture and power, from Hofstede to William Ury's third side. It then turns to emotion, setting Paul Ekman against Lisa Feldman Barrett, and to self-management through Boyatzis and Goleman and Susan David's emotional agility. It concludes with mental health at work: Corey Keyes' dual continua model, the Health and Safety Executive Management Standards and how to notice and start a supportive conversation.

Aims

This course sets out to help managers steady themselves first and then listen: staying composed when emotions run high, adapting across culture and power, designing out avoidable stress at its source and opening a caring conversation with a colleague who may be struggling.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Use tactical empathy and an awareness of cultural difference to help people feel heard before asking them to move.
  2. Apply emotional agility and self-management practices to stay steady and present when conversations become emotionally charged.
  3. Identify sources of work-related stress using the Management Standards and start a supportive conversation with a colleague who may be struggling.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Use mirroring, labelling, calibrated questions and the accusation audit in a difficult conversation.
  2. Use Hofstede's dimensions and high and low context communication as hypotheses to test, without stereotyping an individual counterpart.
  3. Compare Ekman's classical theory of emotion with Barrett's theory of constructed emotion and identify where they genuinely disagree and where they agree.
  4. Describe the four internal competencies in Boyatzis and Goleman's model and Susan David's four skills of emotional agility.
  5. Explain the dual continua model and why the absence of a diagnosis is not the same as being well.
  6. Identify the six Management Standards and use them to diagnose the source of stress in a team.
  7. Identify changes in work, behaviour, energy and relationships that may signal someone is struggling, without attempting a diagnosis.
  8. Distinguish a counterfeit, confirmation and commitment yes, and recognise when 'that's right' signals genuine understanding.
