Who It's For
Leaders in homelessness, housing, health, care and support services
Overview
Someone facing multiple disadvantage may knock on many doors, and each should lead towards help rather than away from it. This day begins with the foundations and scale of homelessness in Wales and England, and multiple disadvantage through the Hard Edges study. It then turns to mental health and the law, substance use, and harm reduction as a way of keeping people alive, with Dame Carol Black's review and WEDINOS. Trauma follows, from Herman and Siegel to the Trauma-Informed Wales framework, then Housing First and psychologically informed environments. It concludes with lived experience leadership, housing with care, the Plymouth Alliance for Complex Needs and staff wellbeing.
Aims
It sets out to develop leaders who respond to the whole person rather than a single need, keep people alive and connected to help, make their services trauma-informed in practice, work across organisational boundaries with shared purpose, and support the people who do this work every day.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain the reframing from complex people to complex systems, and read homelessness figures in Wales and England honestly.
- Apply practical harm reduction steps and a no wrong door approach to remove designed-in barriers to care.
- Plan the steps to move a partnership from paper to practice, while treating staff wellbeing as an organisational responsibility.
What you'll develop
By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:
- Describe the full spectrum of homelessness, from rough sleeping and temporary accommodation to hidden homelessness and people at risk, and explain why a home is where recovery starts.
- Explain the reframing from complex people to complex systems, and how services built for one need create gaps for people facing several.
- Explain co-occurring conditions and the principle in NICE guideline NG58 that no one should be excluded from one service because of the other condition.
- Explain SAMHSA's three Es of trauma and distinguish single incident, complex, developmental, collective and organisational forms of trauma.
- Explain how Housing First differs from the staircase model, and why it treats a home as a foundation for recovery rather than a reward.
- Distinguish lived experience, lived expertise and experts by experience, and explain why lived experience is a form of knowledge rather than only feedback.
- Identify the five key stakeholders of a housing association and describe what the association is accountable to each of them for.
- Distinguish vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, burnout and moral injury, and explain why each calls for a different response.
