About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

New and recently appointed managers in local government, health, housing and voluntary organisations

Overview

Becoming a manager is a change of job, not a bigger version of the old one. This half day, the first half of the Immerse Stepping up, starts with what changes, using Katz's three skill model and Julie Zhuo's first year, then follows Michael Watkins' framework for the first ninety days and a council case on building a management identity. It works through delegating and giving feedback to former peers with Situation, Behaviour, Impact, and the practical basics of team meetings and one to ones. It closes with Ekman's and Feldman Barrett's competing theories of emotion, and with self-awareness and self-management through Boyatzis, Goleman and Susan David.

Aims

It sets out to help new managers start as they mean to go on: setting expectations early, delegating the outcome rather than the task, building confidence in a new identity and staying composed when things go wrong in front of the team.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain what changes when you become a manager, using Katz's three skill model, and plan your first ninety days with Watkins' transition framework.
  2. Apply Situation, Behaviour, Impact to delegate outcomes and give clear feedback to former peers, supported by well-run team meetings and one to ones.
  3. Use emotional agility and self-management practices to notice your reactions and stay composed when difficult moments happen in front of your team.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain why becoming a manager is a change of job, and name the three things that change on day one.
  2. Diagnose whether the team you have inherited needs turning around, realigning or sustaining, and choose an early approach to match.
  3. Describe your current management brand in observable behaviours and choose one visible change to build the brand you want.
  4. Delegate work by describing the outcome, matching it to the person's readiness, and judging the result against the outcome rather than your own method.
  5. Run a first team meeting that listens more than it tells, with clear preparation before and visible follow up after.
  6. Compare Ekman's classical theory of emotion with Barrett's theory of constructed emotion and identify where they genuinely disagree and where they agree.
  7. Describe the four internal competencies in Boyatzis and Goleman's model and Susan David's four skills of emotional agility.
  8. Use Katz's three skill model to judge where your own development effort should go as a first line manager.
