When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Every score is a hypothesis, and capable people can read the same figure in quite different ways. The opening part covers psychometrics in coaching: type and trait approaches, the Big Five, reliability, validity and fairness, the Myers Briggs evidence debate and 360 degree feedback, drawing on Passmore, Barrick and Mount, and Smither. The closing part explains why the same data point is seen differently, using Kahneman, Sibony and Sunstein's work on noise, Dan Kahan's motivated numeracy study and framing effects, and offers six steps of decision hygiene so that a team can read data well together.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Compare type and trait approaches and explain why the Big Five has the strongest research base.
  2. Explain how noise, motivated numeracy, fast thinking and framing lead capable people to read the same data differently.
  3. Assess an instrument against reliability, validity, norms and fairness.
  4. Recognise the five lenses of prior beliefs, professional lens, role and stake, identity and experience in your own reading and in others'.
  5. Plan an ethical feedback conversation that treats every score as a hypothesis and protects consent and data.
  6. Apply the six steps of decision hygiene so that a team or board reads data independently before combining views.

The Modules.

1 hour 15 minutes of learning.

  1. 12Psychometrics in CoachingA good instrument opens a conversation, and every score is a hypothesis. This module covers why coaches use psychometrics, type and trait approaches, the Big Five, reliability, validity, norms and fairness, the Myers Briggs evidence debate, 360 degree feedback, strengths and emotional intelligence tools, and the ethics and competence needed, drawing on Passmore's Psychometrics in Coaching, Pittenger, Barrick and Mount, and Smither.36 min
  2. 05The Same Data Point, Seen DifferentlyCapable, well-intentioned people often read the same figure in quite different ways. This module draws on Daniel Kahneman, Olivier Sibony and Cass Sunstein's work on noise, Dan Kahan's motivated numeracy study, Kahneman's fast and slow thinking and framing effects to explain why, and sets out five lenses every reader brings. It offers six steps of decision hygiene so that a team can read data well together.39 min
