When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Partnership leads, senior managers and board members working across organisations in public service and the voluntary sector

Overview

Most partnerships stall for lack of trust, not goodwill. Sharing its material with Stronger together, this course starts with relational leadership, drawing on Chris Huxham and Siv Vangen's research on collaborative advantage and inertia and Adam Kahane's ideas of power and love, with the Poverty Truth Commission as a case. It then weighs Collective Impact, as set out by John Kania and Mark Kramer, against Tom Wolff's critique and the Strive Partnership. Negotiation in practice follows, from integrative negotiation to public procurement and the 2023 Hollywood writers' strike. The final section brings in stakeholder mapping, the pre-meeting, the reciprocity ledger and the Grameen Bank.

Aims

Its purpose is to help leaders rebuild momentum in stalled partnerships by building trust before raising the stakes, testing whose agenda the common agenda really serves, negotiating for value within public sector limits, and influencing ethically across silos before influence is needed.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain collaborative advantage and inertia, and apply the trust-building loop to sequence joint work in a stalled partnership.
  2. Identify whose voice is shaping a common agenda, and how holding the pen and the data affects power in a partnership.
  3. Map stakeholders on a power and interest grid, and plan pre-meetings and specific asks that build a coalition ethically.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Explain collaborative advantage and collaborative inertia and identify the four themes of aims, power, trust and membership that make collaboration hard.
  2. Describe the five conditions of Collective Impact and explain what a credible backbone function does.
  3. Distinguish the distributive and integrative elements of a deal, and create value by trading issues that each side values differently.
  4. Map stakeholders on a power and interest grid and plan how to engage each quadrant.
  5. Apply the trust-building loop to sequence joint work, starting small and keeping promises before raising the stakes.
  6. Assess the critiques of Collective Impact and use the five shifts of Collective Impact 3.0 as a diagnostic for your own partnership.
  7. Explain how a BATNA strengthened in advance shapes high stakes outcomes, using the 2023 writers' strike as an example.
  8. Plan pre-meetings, specific asks and cross silo alliances that build a coalition before a decision is formally made.
