When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Overview and Outcomes.
Overview
A board can only see what it is shown, and more information rarely means more insight. Opening with performance reporting, the course covers KPIs, lag and lead indicators, materiality, the standard every board report should meet and the right reporting cadence, with Tesco's 2014 accounting scandal as a warning that a metric is only as honest as the system behind it. It then turns to measures and dashboards, drawing on Mark Friedman's Results-Based Accountability, Audit Wales's review of outcome information for Welsh council leaders and Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic's Storytelling with Data, closing with five questions any board can ask.
What you'll develop
In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:
- Explain what integrated reporting combines and assess a board report against the standard of concise, reliable, strategically focused and visible.
- Design or review a dashboard backward from the decisions it must inform, balancing lag and lead indicators and Friedman's three questions.
- Distinguish lag and lead indicators and use them, with the four key reporting areas and an appropriate cadence, to design a balanced board dashboard.
- Choose a chart that fits the question being asked, and recognise the design choices that can make a chart mislead.
- Apply the lesson of Tesco by asking how a reported metric is actually produced rather than accepting it at face value.
- Use five board questions to test any dashboard for purpose, signal and noise, gaps, gaming and action.
The Modules.

- 06Performance, Reporting and MetricsA board can only see what it is shown, and more information rarely means more insight. This module covers KPIs, lag and lead indicators, integrated reporting and materiality, the standard every board report should meet, the four reporting areas every board needs, and the right reporting cadence. Tesco's 2014 accounting scandal shows that a metric is only as honest as the system behind it, with a four step process for building a dashboard your board will use.45 min
- 14Measures, Targets and DashboardsMost performance data reaches boards as a dashboard, and a dashboard is for decisions, not display. This module covers lag and lead indicators, Mark Friedman's Results-Based Accountability and its three questions, Audit Wales's review of how outcome information reaches Welsh council leaders, five features of a good dashboard, choosing honest charts and Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic's Storytelling with Data, closing with five questions any board can ask.38 min
