Overview and Outcomes.
Overview
This module looks at a director's role beyond the directorate. It covers Sir Michael Lyons' idea of place-shaping, Huish and Milliner's verbs of partnership leadership, the director as convenor and ambassador of place, growth first and inclusive growth, why people follow a story before a strategy, a six-step sequence for building a narrative of place, and speaking partners' organisational languages. This capstone brings the move into corporate leadership together in a practical plan for the first 100 days as a director. It uses Michael Watkins' transition framework, a timeline from before day one to day 100, two illustrative composite cases at Cyngor Sir Glanmor and Northvale District Council seen through earlier frameworks, a self-assessment against the eight Solace and LGA themes, and a 100-day plan template.
What you'll develop
In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:
- Explain Lyons' idea of place-shaping, why many outcomes residents care about lie beyond any single directorate, and how growth first and inclusive growth differ.
- Apply the verbs of partnership leadership and the convenor, ambassador and political link roles when working with partners you do not manage.
- Plan a narrative of place using the six-step sequence and the one page tool, framed in language each partner recognises.
- Explain why early choices shape how a new director is seen, using Watkins' disciplines of promoting yourself, accelerating learning and matching strategy to situation.
- Apply the frameworks from earlier modules to the illustrative Glanmor and Northvale cases to judge a director's best moves.
