Who It's For
Political and managerial leaders, top teams and managers through reorganisation
Overview
Structures change quickly; people, cultures and identities change slowly. This programme turns to the human side of reorganisation. It explores merger syndrome, Bridges' distinction between change and transition, and Schein's levels of culture, with TUPE in brief. It then examines political and managerial top teams through reorganisation, drawing on Inside Top Teams, Heifetz's adaptive challenges, Dr Jonathan Huish's research in Rhondda Cynon Taf and the Top Team Development Approach. It looks past vesting day to embedding, real benefits and how middle managers make sense of change, and closes with the Tri-borough, Northamptonshire and the new unitaries in Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset.
Aims
This programme aims to develop leaders who keep people with them through structural change. It is for political and managerial leaders, top teams and managers who want to lead transition as well as change, build a shared culture and secure benefits that last beyond vesting day, recognising that when people are led well, structure follows.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how merger syndrome, transition and culture shape people's experience of reorganisation, and plan practical steps to keep staff whole through transfer.
- Apply top team development principles to strengthen the shared leadership of political and managerial top teams before and after vesting day.
- Assess real reorganisation cases and your own context through purpose, politics, people, culture and time, and plan how benefits will be embedded and reviewed.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Identify the signs of merger syndrome and the leadership responses that reduce it.
- Apply Bridges' distinction between change and transition, including naming endings and supporting people through the neutral zone.
- Explain why the political and managerial top teams must work as one, and the distinct roles of members, officers and statutory officers.
- Use the three-ball juggling image to assess whether a top team is attending to vision, stakeholder interests and helping people adapt.
- Explain Huish and Milliner's six lessons and why middle managers, as Balogun and Johnson found, are the pivot point of structural change.
- Analyse a real case of structural change through the lenses of drivers, model, people, politics and benefits.
