Who It's For

Leaders and aspiring leaders in public bodies and voluntary organisations who want to speak up when it matters

Overview

Confidence that lasts rests on evidence, not bravado. Completing the Immerse Leading on your own terms, this half day opens with French and Raven's six bases of power, Weber's types of authority and the negotiated end of apartheid. It then explores the science of confidence through Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy and the contested Dunning-Kruger effect, and rethinks the inner voice with Basima Tewfik's research, Beck's thinking traps and Ellis's ABCDE model. Building confidence in practice follows, from Ibarra's possible selves to Oettingen's WOOP method, then research on silence and voice in the room. The final section brings in Kristin Neff's self-compassion, Self-Determination Theory and Seligman's PERMA.

Aims

This programme aims to help leaders aim for calibrated rather than maximum confidence: understanding where their influence comes from, talking back to the inner critic with evidence, preparing deliberately for high-stakes moments and sustaining their motivation and wellbeing so their voice is heard when it matters.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain the four sources of self-efficacy and why calibrated confidence serves a leader better than maximum confidence.
  2. Apply Beck's thinking traps and Ellis's ABCDE model to question an unhelpful inner voice and replace it with a more accurate account.
  3. Plan how you will hold your presence in a high-stakes meeting, using the WOOP method and research on silence and voice.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish influence, power and authority, and identify which of French and Raven's six bases of power you and others are drawing on.
  2. Explain Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy and why self-efficacy differs from self-esteem.
  3. Describe what Tewfik's research found about impostor thoughts, and identify the thinking traps that feed them.
  4. Explain why acting your way into new behaviour, rather than waiting to feel ready, builds confidence, drawing on Ibarra and Bandura.
  5. Explain why capable people stay silent at work, using Milliken and colleagues' findings and Detert and Edmondson's implicit voice theories.
  6. Describe Neff's three components of self-compassion and distinguish self-compassion from self-pity, excuse making and lowered standards.
  7. Explain Self-Determination Theory's three basic needs and identify what it looks like when each goes unmet.
  8. Compare Weber's traditional, charismatic and rational-legal authority and assess the risk of an organisation depending on charismatic authority.
