When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Women in their first or second leadership role, and the people who sponsor them

Overview

This one-day programme moves in three stages. It starts on the inside, with leadership identity, stated and revealed values, ethics and the science of confidence, from Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy and calibrated confidence to an honest look at the Dunning-Kruger effect and power posing. It then turns to the room: French and Raven's bases of power, Kanter on tokens, Gruenfeld on playing high and playing low, and who speaks for you through sponsors, networks, negotiation and pay, drawing on Kram, Hewlett and the BBC equal pay cases, before designing sponsorship that is fair. Finally it turns to lasting well: naming second-generation bias and the double bind, answering the inner critic with Kristin Neff's self-compassion, Self-Determination Theory under pressure, and Ibarra's authenticity paradox.

Aims

This programme aims to develop women leaders who build confidence deliberately and on evidence, are seen and credited for their work, negotiate and seek sponsorship well, and recognise when barriers sit in systems rather than in themselves, while equipping those who sponsor them to back talent fairly.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Use Bandura's sources of self-efficacy, an evidence file and a mastery ladder to build calibrated confidence and answer impostor thoughts with facts.
  2. Plan how to be seen, heard and credited, strengthen your sponsorship and networks, and prepare a well-evidenced request on pay or progression.
  3. Apply an understanding of second-generation bias, self-compassion and motivation to lead as yourself for the long haul and to sponsor others fairly.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how leadership identity develops through being seen, and seeing yourself, as a leader, and why identity comes before skills.
  2. Apply the consequences, duty and character lenses to an ethical dilemma and plan the words you would use to act with moral courage.
  3. Plan an evidence file and a set of prompts you can use to test impostor thoughts against the facts.
  4. Apply practical moves to speak up, hold your ground under challenge and prepare for a high-stakes meeting.
  5. Use BATNA, reservation price, ZOPA and relational framing to prepare and make a well-evidenced request.
  6. Design a fair sponsorship scheme that is open and accountable, distinguishing lawful positive action from positive discrimination.
  7. Apply the self-compassion break and the friend test after difficult feedback, a decision that did not work out, or a public mistake.
  8. Plan for sustainable leadership using energy, boundaries, steadying techniques and a ninety-day plan of commitments.
