When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders, managers, engagement leads and board members in health, housing, councils and the voluntary sector

Overview

Lived experience now appears everywhere in public service language, and leaders must make sure it means something real. Taken from the one-day Voices that shape the work, this course opens with Baljeet Sandhu's three forms of expertise and Miranda Fricker's testimonial and hermeneutical injustice, then lived experience leadership and Recovery Colleges. Trauma-informed engagement and paying for lived experience follow, with NIHR rates as a benchmark. It then confronts tokenism through Arnstein's ladder, Peter Beresford's models and the 4Pi National Involvement Standards, with the Poverty Truth Commission among the cases. The closing section explores what we mean by community and the participation ladder, tested against the Sheffield street trees dispute.

Aims

The aim is to help leaders treat lived experience as knowledge rather than feedback: recognising tokenism and replacing it, building fair pay, support and a real share of power into their plans, and choosing the level of participation honestly so that a seat comes with a say.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Assess where your organisation sits on the spectrum from anecdote to leadership, and identify where credibility is unevenly given.
  2. Plan a reward and recognition policy that pays lived experience fairly while protecting people's benefits and tax position.
  3. Use Arnstein's ladder and the 4Pi standards to identify tokenism, and match engagement honestly to the power genuinely on offer.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish lived experience, lived expertise and experts by experience, and explain why lived experience is a form of knowledge rather than only feedback.
  2. Explain Sandhu's lived, learnt and practice expertise and use them to identify which forms are missing from your leadership team.
  3. Explain why power, control, belief and trust make trauma relevant to engagement, and describe the SAMHSA and Trauma-Informed Wales principles.
  4. Explain the four reasons for paying people for lived experience work, including how unpaid involvement narrows who takes part.
  5. Identify common patterns of tokenism and locate them on Arnstein's ladder of citizen participation.
  6. Apply the five questions of context, power, conditions, change and transfer to any case of lived experience involvement.
  7. Apply the four lenses of geographic, interest, identity and practice communities to a real place, naming the communities your work is likely to miss.
  8. Describe Arnstein's eight rungs and three tiers and identify which rung a piece of engagement is actually operating on.
