Who It's For

Leaders who want people and communities to shape services

Overview

A seat is not a say, and people can tell quickly whether their involvement changes anything. Voices that shape the work is about sharing power well. It moves along the engagement continuum, using Arnstein's ladder and the IAP2 spectrum, from communication and trust to consultation done properly under the Gunning principles. It explores seldom heard voices, co-design and experience-based co-design, and co-production from Ostrom and Cahn to its place in Welsh law. Lived experience runs through the day, drawing on Baljeet Sandhu's work, trauma-informed engagement, paying people fairly and the movement's own critique of tokenism, with capstone cases including the Poverty Truth Commission.

Aims

This programme aims to help leaders move from consulting people to sharing power with them, so that people and communities genuinely shape services. It develops the judgement to choose the right level of engagement, the practice to involve seldom heard voices safely and fairly, and the honesty to recognise and avoid tokenism.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish levels of engagement, from informing and consultation to co-design, co-production and lived experience leadership, and choose the right one.
  2. Plan lawful, inclusive and trauma-informed engagement that reaches seldom heard voices and values lived experience as expertise.
  3. Lead participation that shares power genuinely, recognises and pays contributors fairly and shows clearly what has changed as a result.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Match a communication approach, from telling to dialogue, to the moment, and assess a standard letter against the five basics of good communication.
  2. Identify the triggers that can make consultation legally required and explain why a voluntary consultation must still be carried out properly.
  3. Distinguish consultation, design thinking, co-design and co-production, and apply McKercher's four principles and the Double Diamond to a co-design process.
  4. Explain the origins of co-production in Ostrom's research and Cahn's core economy, and describe why reciprocity turns recipients into contributors.
  5. Explain Sandhu's lived, learnt and practice expertise and use them to identify which forms are missing from your leadership team.
  6. Explain the four reasons for paying people for lived experience work, including how unpaid involvement narrows who takes part.
  7. Apply the five questions of context, power, conditions, change and transfer to any case of lived experience involvement.
  8. Describe Arnstein's eight rungs and three tiers and identify which rung a piece of engagement is actually operating on.
