Who It's For

New managers building their team, voice and professional network

Overview

Once the first weeks are behind you, the work of management widens: communicating so that people act, building the team you need and growing a network beyond it. This programme brings those strands together. It uses Barbara Minto's Pyramid Principle and lessons from Amazon's six page memo to put the answer first, Talya Bauer's Four C's to treat onboarding as a ninety day process the line manager owns, and Herminia Ibarra's research on outsight to widen your reach. A capstone follows Julie Zhuo and a newly promoted shift supervisor, showing how deliberate habits compound, before you apply the toolkit to your own team.

Aims

This programme aims to develop new managers' voice and reach: communicating clearly and predictably, hiring and onboarding deliberately, and building a professional network that supports a broader role, so that confidence grows from changed behaviour rather than waiting to be felt first.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Structure messages using the Pyramid Principle, choose the right channel and set a communication rhythm your team can rely on and check against.
  2. Plan a deliberate recruitment and ninety day onboarding for a new starter, defining the evidence you need and using Bauer's Four C's.
  3. Apply Ibarra's three shifts and the wider management toolkit to map your network and draft a first ninety day plan for your team.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Read a management case actively by diagnosing the situation, finding the deliberate choice and tracing the outcome to the habit behind it.
  2. Connect events in a real management case to the programme's five central ideas.
  3. Structure a message using the Pyramid Principle, stating the answer first and supporting it with your two or three strongest reasons.
  4. Choose the right channel for a message and set a predictable communication rhythm for your team.
  5. Define a role and the evidence you will look for before interviewing, and ask questions that test for potential, culture add and evidence.
  6. Explain Ibarra's idea of outsight before insight and why confidence tends to follow new behaviour.
