About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

This module sets out why safeguarding is a core leadership responsibility rather than a training requirement or a policy on a shelf. It offers a plain working definition, four groups every leader must keep in view, and a spectrum from prevention to protection. It introduces the leader's four jobs of culture, systems, assurance and learning, contrasts compliance with culture, and sets out a six-stage organisational safeguarding cycle. This module compares the two legal routes to one duty to protect in Wales and England. It covers the five principles and Part 7 of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, including the Adult Protection and Support Order, the Care Act 2014 principles and Making Safeguarding Personal, the reasonable cause to suspect threshold, mental capacity, and changes in the law from 2023 to 2026. This module explores how harm is named and why it so often goes unseen. It compares how the Welsh Act, England's care and support guidance and Working Together 2023 define abuse and neglect, sets out signs leaders should equip staff to notice, and draws on review themes including Brandon's start again syndrome and Lord Laming's respectful uncertainty. It closes with six steps for responding to a concern.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain why safeguarding is a leadership responsibility and identify the four groups, including staff and volunteers, that your organisation must safeguard.
  2. Describe the leader's four jobs of culture, systems, assurance and learning, and distinguish safeguarding as compliance from safeguarding as culture.
  3. Compare the main safeguarding duties, boards, procedures and review routes in Wales and England, and identify which apply to your own organisation.
  4. Explain the reasonable cause to suspect threshold and set out what it means for how your staff report concerns.
  5. Identify the categories of abuse and neglect used in Wales, England and children's guidance, and recognise signs that appear as patterns rather than single events.
