Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Leaders of teams who carry other people's distress in their daily work
Overview
This Focus looks at the cost of caring and what leaders owe the people who carry it. It begins by distinguishing vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, burnout and moral injury, drawing on McCann and Pearlman, Figley, Maslach and Leiter, Shay and Litz, Stamm's ProQOL and the UK Covid-19 Inquiry. It then turns to support that works: the pressure, strain and burnout pathway, Hawkins and Shohet's seven-eyed model of supervision, Schwartz Rounds, Gibbs's reflective cycle and care after a traumatic event. The third module examines boundaries, the critique of ACEs and trauma language, and evidencing practice honestly. Three real cases, the Manchester Resilience Hub, Everyone In and Hillsborough, bring the threads together.
Aims
The aim is to help leaders recognise strain early at individual, team and organisational level, build reflective space and evidence-informed support into the working week, and hold trauma-informed boundaries honestly, so that staff recover rather than simply endure.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Diagnose signs of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, burnout and moral injury in your team and choose the different response each one calls for.
- Plan protected reflective space and an evidence-informed response to traumatic events at work, from psychological first aid to peer support and referral.
- Use an honest evidence framework and the main critiques of trauma language to judge your service's trauma-informed practice without overclaiming its impact.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Distinguish vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, burnout and moral injury, and explain why each calls for a different response.
- Recognise early signs of strain at individual, team and organisational levels, using the three dimensions of burnout and the ProQOL framework with care.
- Outline how supervision, Schwartz Rounds and Gibbs's reflective cycle create protected reflective space, and what conditions make them work.
- Plan an evidence-informed response to a traumatic event at work, from psychological first aid through active monitoring and peer support to referral.
- Use an honest evidence framework and the organisational self-check to judge your service's practice without overclaiming.
- Identify the threads the three cases share and use them to examine one process in your own organisation from the receiving end.
