When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For
Local government officers and managers leading people through major organisational change
Overview
Local government is changing shape, and officers are being asked to lead organisations, teams and services that do not yet exist. This flagship brings together six half days as one foundation. It starts with leading through uncertainty, then management through change, and wellbeing, resilience and readiness. It moves on to culture, trust and relationships, and political acumen and influence. It closes with designing what comes next: the new council, strategy, decisions under uncertainty, creativity and design thinking. Each half day can also be taken on its own.
Aims
The aim is to give officers a shared foundation for leading through change: steady in themselves, skilled with their teams, aware of culture and politics, and ready to help shape what comes next. It is for local government officers and managers at any stage of organisational change, who want one coherent journey rather than separate courses.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Lead yourself and your team through uncertainty and change, choosing the response each situation needs and looking after wellbeing along the way.
- Read and shape culture, build trust and partnerships, and work with elected members with political acumen and integrity.
- Think strategically and creatively about the new organisation, deciding well under uncertainty and designing services around people.
What you'll develop
Through the programme, you will be able to:
- Use Honey and Mumford's four learning styles to choose development that sticks for you and to coach each team member in the way they learn.
- Explain how Maslow, Herzberg and Vroom each identify a different mechanism behind motivation, and use them to diagnose a specific motivation problem.
- Distinguish wellbeing as a state, resilience as a capacity and adaptability as a skill, and explain why each needs a different intervention.
- Explain Schein's three levels of culture and why underlying assumptions, rather than espoused values, predict what people actually do.
- Describe the four dimensions of a councillor's role, representative, decision maker, community leader and case worker, and explain why they pull in different directions.
- Describe Huish and Milliner's five phases of transition from district into unitary and the leadership demands of each.
- Explain Edmondson's definition of psychological safety and describe how a leader's response to the first piece of bad news builds or destroys it.
