When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For
Housing association and council housing leaders and boards
Overview
Leading homes and communities is the complete housing programme: four whole topics on governance, regulation, complaints and resident experience across Wales and England. It begins with how social housing came to be, the different types of housing association, co-regulation, boards, committees, the mixed financial model and housing with care. It then sets housing within the wider craft of regulation, from Ayres and Braithwaite's enforcement pyramid to consumer standards after Grenfell and Awaab Ishak. Complaints and ombudsmen follow, with Awaab's Law, candour and learning from failure, before resident experience, failure demand, respect and bilingual service. Cases including the Trivallis report and Grenfell hold it together.
Aims
This programme aims to develop housing leaders and boards who govern well, meet regulation as a floor rather than a ceiling, and put residents' safety, voice and dignity at the centre of every decision, turning complaints and failure into learning that changes how homes and services are run.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how housing associations and council landlords are governed, financed and regulated in Wales and England, and what boards and executives each owe residents and regulators.
- Assess your organisation's complaint handling, consumer standards and tenant safety, including damp and mould under Awaab's Law, against the codes and lessons of recent cases.
- Lead a culture that designs services around residents' experience, treats every complaint as evidence and builds genuine tenant involvement into decisions at every level.
What you'll develop
Through the programme, you will be able to:
- Place the major landmarks in the history of social housing in order, from Victorian philanthropy to the Housing Act 1988.
- Describe the four building blocks of a housing association's strategic framework and how they fit together across the planning cycle.
- Identify the five key stakeholders of a housing association and describe what the association is accountable to each of them for.
- Explain the lessons of Mid Staffordshire and the Dash review for how boards should treat complaints, family voices and ratings.
- Explain, using Hirschman's exit, voice and loyalty, why ignored voice in a service people cannot leave leads to silent disengagement rather than exit.
- Apply the four habits of useful learning reviews and the four aims of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework to a complaint or incident in your own setting.
- Distinguish value demand from failure demand and explain why studying the reasons for contact reveals where a system fails.
- Explain what the Grenfell, Trivallis and Tell Us Once cases show about voice, records, respect, leadership attention and learning.
