About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Women leaders and aspiring leaders in housing, health, councils and the voluntary sector

Overview

Capable leaders often stay quiet because doubt sounds like fact. This Focus, taken from the Immerse Leading on your own terms, begins with the science of confidence through Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy, Moore and Healy's three forms of overconfidence and how an unsourced statistic spread. It rethinks the inner voice with Tewfik's research on impostor thoughts, Beck's thinking traps and Ellis's ABCDE model, then builds confidence through a mastery ladder, reappraising nerves as excitement and Gawande's experience of taking a coach. It turns to presence with Detert and Edmondson's implicit voice theories, Gruenfeld's playing high and low and Rudman's backlash effect, closing with Neff, Self-Determination Theory and PERMA.

Aims

It sets out to help women leaders question impostor thoughts rather than obey them, prepare well for high-stakes meetings, read and respond to backlash with judgement, and look after their motivation under pressure, so that public services do not lose their voice and judgement.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Assess your own confidence against the evidence, using Bandura's sources of self-efficacy and the three forms of overconfidence.
  2. Use a mastery ladder and the reappraisal of nerves as excitement to build confidence for a specific challenge you face.
  3. Plan your presence in a high-stakes meeting using implicit voice theories, playing high and low, and awareness of the backlash effect.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Explain Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy and why self-efficacy differs from self-esteem.
  2. Describe what Tewfik's research found about impostor thoughts, and identify the thinking traps that feed them.
  3. Explain why acting your way into new behaviour, rather than waiting to feel ready, builds confidence, drawing on Ibarra and Bandura.
  4. Explain why capable people stay silent at work, using Milliken and colleagues' findings and Detert and Edmondson's implicit voice theories.
  5. Describe Neff's three components of self-compassion and distinguish self-compassion from self-pity, excuse making and lowered standards.
  6. Explain Self-Determination Theory's three basic needs and identify what it looks like when each goes unmet.
  7. Distinguish calibrated confidence from underconfidence and from Moore and Healy's three forms of overconfidence.
  8. Use Ellis's ABCDE model and Neff's three components of self-compassion to examine and reframe a harsh inner voice.
