About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

This module focuses on building grounded confidence through action, practice and preparation. It draws on Herminia Ibarra's possible selves and authenticity paradox, the power posing replication debate, Bandura's mastery experience as a mastery ladder, Brooks's research on reappraising nerves as excitement, Oettingen's WOOP method and Atul Gawande's experience of taking a coach, ending with a 30-day confidence plan. This module examines why capable people stay quiet, and how to speak up, be heard and show presence when doubt says stay silent. It draws on Milliken, Morrison and Hewlin's research on silence, Detert and Edmondson's implicit voice theories, amplification in the Obama White House, Gruenfeld's playing high and playing low, and Rudman's backlash effect, with tools for challenge and high-stakes meetings.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain why acting your way into new behaviour, rather than waiting to feel ready, builds confidence, drawing on Ibarra and Bandura.
  2. Assess popular confidence techniques against the evidence, including power posing and reappraising anxiety as excitement.
  3. Use a mastery ladder and Oettingen's WOOP method to plan for a specific high-stakes moment.
  4. Explain why capable people stay silent at work, using Milliken and colleagues' findings and Detert and Edmondson's implicit voice theories.
  5. Choose deliberately between playing high and playing low, and make your work visible through evidence rather than self-promotion.
