When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For

Leaders and managers rebuilding trust after difficulty across public service and voluntary organisations

Overview

Trust lost in a crisis is earned back slowly, and the people doing that work need resilience of their own. Built from the Immerse The worst day, this Focus begins with repair in practice, with a team, across an organisation and within yourself, drawing on Dirks, Lewicki and Zaheer, Mersey Care's just and restorative culture and Kristin Neff's self-compassion. It then turns to naming the storm through Jamais Cascio's BANI framework of brittle, anxious, nonlinear and incomprehensible conditions. A capstone follows on the four-day week pilot, United States Navy carrier operations and Costco. Last, it looks at Gary Klein's naturalistic decision making and the Delphi Method.

Aims

Its purpose is to help leaders rebuild trust deliberately and sustain themselves while doing so: planning repair over ninety days, reading their environment clearly without alarm, and drawing well on expert judgement when pressure is high and time is short.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Plan a ninety day approach to repairing trust with a team or organisation, drawing on just and restorative culture.
  2. Use the BANI framework to read your operating environment clearly, calmly and without alarm, even as conditions shift.
  3. Apply naturalistic decision making and the Delphi Method to draw well on expert judgement under pressure.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Describe how reparation, restitution, checkable change and independent oversight put the social equilibrium and structural routes to repair into practice.
  2. Distinguish VUCA from BANI and identify which BANI letter a current situation most resembles.
  3. Explain how established models account for the results of the UK four-day week pilot, carrier flight deck operations and Costco's response to the 2008 crisis.
  4. Explain Klein's recognition primed decision model and why expert recognition under pressure is not guesswork.
  5. Explain how anonymity, controlled feedback and iteration each remove a specific distortion in group judgement.
  6. Assess how Mersey Care's just and restorative culture changed the first question asked when things go wrong, and what its reported results show.
  7. Distinguish a prediction problem from a sense-making problem and judge when more data will genuinely help.
  8. Identify the patterns the three cases share, including redesigning demands, moving control towards the work and gaining from disruption.
