When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders and managers in health, social care, housing, councils and the voluntary sector

Overview

Leaders set the conditions in which people are helped or harmed. Built from Seen, safe and heard, this course opens with Herman's account of complex trauma, the Welsh Adverse Childhood Experiences study and Siegel's window of tolerance, with Aberfan in 1966 as its case. It moves to SAMHSA's four Rs and six principles and Harris and Fallot's five core values, then the Trauma-Informed Wales framework and the TrACE Organisations Toolkit. The cost of caring follows, from Figley on compassion fatigue to Shay and Litz on moral injury, with Schwartz Rounds and supervision. The final part turns to trauma-informed engagement and paying and valuing lived experience.

Aims

The course is there to help leaders make systems, not only conversations, trauma-informed: applying recognised principles to how services work, recognising strain and moral injury in their teams before it becomes harm, and engaging people with lived experience in ways that are predictable, safe and fairly rewarded.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain SAMHSA's three Es, and why findings such as the Welsh ACE study describe population patterns rather than predictions about any one person.
  2. Distinguish vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, burnout and moral injury, and plan how to reduce moral injury around hard decisions.
  3. Design engagement that is predictable and offers real choice, and cost fair payment for lived experience into budgets from the start.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Explain SAMHSA's three Es of trauma and distinguish single incident, complex, developmental, collective and organisational forms of trauma.
  2. Describe SAMHSA's four Rs and six principles and explain how each translates into what an organisation does rather than what it knows.
  3. Describe the four practice levels and five principles of the Trauma-Informed Wales framework and what makes it a societal rather than a single-service approach.
  4. Distinguish vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, burnout and moral injury, and explain why each calls for a different response.
  5. Explain the pressure, strain and burnout pathway and why recovery, not endurance, protects capacity over time.
  6. Explain why power, control, belief and trust make trauma relevant to engagement, and describe the SAMHSA and Trauma-Informed Wales principles.
  7. Explain the four reasons for paying people for lived experience work, including how unpaid involvement narrows who takes part.
  8. Interpret findings such as the Welsh ACE study as population patterns rather than predictions about any one person.
