About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Delegating and giving feedback are the conversations new managers find hardest, and avoided conversations only grow harder. This module offers a clear structure for delegating the outcome rather than the task, for giving feedback to a former peer using Situation, Behaviour, Impact, and for handling pushback calmly. It also covers keeping your own manager informed and building a peer support network. None of the practical basics of management is complicated, but all of them are easy to neglect under pressure. This module covers running your first team meeting, holding one to ones that belong to the other person, protecting important but non urgent work, and handling your first unexpected problem in front of your team. A comparison of two first months shows how much a handful of early habits matter.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Delegate work by describing the outcome, matching it to the person's readiness, and judging the result against the outcome rather than your own method.
  2. Plan and hold a feedback conversation with a former peer using Situation, Behaviour, Impact, including how to respond to pushback.
  3. Keep your own manager genuinely informed, avoiding both over reporting and under reporting.
  4. Run a first team meeting that listens more than it tells, with clear preparation before and visible follow up after.
  5. Set up and protect one to ones that are owned by the team member rather than used as a status update.
