When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

A concern raised is free assurance. This module treats speaking up as part of the assurance system, covering whistleblowing law under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998, lessons from Mid Staffordshire and the Francis inquiry, the six parts of a speaking up system that works, and the unequal costs of speaking up. The Wirecard case shows why boards should treat the challenger as information, not as the enemy. Every one of these failures had assurance on paper. This capstone module applies four lenses, evidence not reassurance, the lines and their independence, the committee and the map, and fraud and voice, to three real cases: Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Thurrock Council and Kids Company. It draws out four common gaps and ends with four questions to take to your own board.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain why a concern raised is a source of assurance, and describe the basic protections of UK whistleblowing law and their limits.
  2. Plan a speaking up system with clear routes, triage, protection, investigation, feedback and learning, allowing for the unequal costs of speaking up.
  3. Assess the health of a speaking up culture using volumes, themes, time to resolve, reports of detriment and feedback from those who spoke.
  4. Apply the four lenses of evidence, independence, the committee and map, and fraud and voice to analyse a governance failure fairly, without implying individual wrongdoing.
  5. Explain why assurance on the accounts is the floor rather than the ceiling of a board's assurance.
