When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Feedback habits and decision styles that feel natural are often deeply cultural. This module works through Erin Meyer's eight Culture Map scales for reading cross-national difference, then turns to the distinct pressures on culture in local government, the voluntary and third sector, and multinational NGOs. A comparison of two Welsh councils and a housing association merger composite show what crosses borders and sectors, with practical checks for partnerships. This capstone introduces no new theory. It applies frameworks from across the programme, including the Cultural Web, Schein's three levels, psychological safety, the Competing Values Framework and Denison, to four organisations at very different scales: NASA and the normalisation of deviance, the Ritz-Carlton, a composite local government reorganisation, and Basecamp. It closes with a combined self-assessment and the new starter test.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Describe Meyer's eight Culture Map scales and use them to explain friction in cross-national and cross-organisational work.
  2. Explain the specific pressures that shape culture in local government and in the voluntary and third sector, and how they differ from private sector settings.
  3. Apply a readiness check before a partnership or joint bid, reading a partner's culture and designing around common cross-sector failure points.
  4. Apply several culture frameworks together to explain the outcomes at NASA, the Ritz-Carlton, a merging council and Basecamp.
  5. Use the Cultural Web, Schein's three levels and a psychological safety audit together as a combined self-assessment of your own organisation.
