When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Culture is decided by precedent, one decision at a time. This module sets out Schein's primary embedding mechanisms, ways to measure culture through pulse surveys and leading indicators, and the evidence on change that sticks by building on existing pockets of desired behaviour. It then turns to mergers, contrasting Gerstner's turnaround at IBM with the HP and Compaq clash, and closes with a culture due diligence checklist. Psychological safety is not comfort; it is whether bad news can travel while there is still time to act. This module draws on Edmondson's three moves, Coyle's three skills and belonging cues, a standards and safety matrix, Sutton on the cost of one difficult senior person, and Darley and Latane's bystander effect. Pixar's Braintrust and Bridgewater's radical transparency are contrasted, and a three question safety audit follows.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Identify Schein's embedding mechanisms, both day to day and through systems, and explain why they shape culture more than formal statements.
  2. Plan a culture change that builds on existing strength and avoids the four common reasons culture change fails.
  3. Apply a culture due diligence checklist to a merger or service combination, choosing deliberate blending over default dominance.
  4. Explain what psychological safety is and is not, and how it combines with high standards to create a learning zone.
  5. Apply Edmondson's three moves and Coyle's three skills to build safety and belonging in your own team.
