Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Leaders diagnosing and changing culture with their colleagues
Overview
Knowing your culture matters only if you can do something with it. This programme moves from diagnosis to deliberate change, beginning with Johnson and Scholes' Cultural Web and its six elements, then using Conway's Law and the McKinsey 7S framework to show how structures, processes and space carry culture. It sets out Schein's embedding mechanisms, change that builds on existing pockets of good practice, and culture due diligence in mergers, contrasting IBM with HP and Compaq. It closes with psychological safety, drawing on Edmondson, Coyle and the bystander effect, because change depends on bad news travelling in time.
Aims
This programme aims to develop leaders who diagnose culture with colleagues rather than about them, and who shape it deliberately through everyday decisions, structures and the conditions for safety and candour, including during mergers and service combinations where cultures meet.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Apply the Cultural Web and a structure and culture alignment check to map an organisation's paradigm and what its processes and spaces signal.
- Plan a culture change or merger that builds on existing strengths, uses Schein's embedding mechanisms and avoids the common reasons culture change fails.
- Build psychological safety alongside high standards in your team, using Edmondson's three moves, Coyle's three skills and a short safety audit.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Describe the six elements of the Cultural Web and explain how they reinforce the paradigm at its centre.
- Apply the Cultural Web to map an organisation and identify its paradigm, including reading its stories and control systems for what they reveal.
- Explain how structure and culture shape each other, using Conway's Law and the McKinsey 7S framework.
- Assess what your own processes, approval chains, physical space and digital tools signal about trust, using a structure and culture alignment check.
- Identify Schein's embedding mechanisms, both day to day and through systems, and explain why they shape culture more than formal statements.
- Explain what psychological safety is and is not, and how it combines with high standards to create a learning zone.
