About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers, HR professionals and service leaders in councils, the NHS, housing, police, fire and charities in Wales and England.

Overview

This half-day Explore moves from first principles to the law and then to each protected characteristic. It opens by separating equality, equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, with lessons from the Ford Dagenham strike. It then sets out the Equality Act 2010, the Public Sector Equality Duty and Brown principles, the Welsh socio-economic duty and the law in motion to 2026. A section on bias weighs the Implicit Association Test against process design. It closes with intersectionality and social class, race equality through Macpherson and the Casey review, equal pay and harassment, and religion, belief, age and the Eweida case.

Aims

This half-day Explore aims to develop the legal grounding and practical judgement to make fair decisions about people and services. It builds the habits of giving due regard while options are open, designing bias out of process, reading equality data beneath the headline and weighing apparently competing rights through proportionality.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Identify where legal risk arises in everyday decisions about staff and service users.
  2. Plan equality impact assessments and positive action that stay lawful and change outcomes.
  3. Interpret equality data across characteristics to reveal disadvantage that single labels hide.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish equality, equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, and explain why each can be achieved without the others.
  2. Apply sections 158 and 159 to plan positive action that stays lawful and avoids positive discrimination.
  3. Plan an equality impact assessment that starts while options are open, uses evidence and engagement, and changes the decision where needed.
  4. Set out which equality changes are in force, which are coming with a date, and which are still pending.
  5. Apply process design, including structured interviews, agreed criteria, independent scoring and accountability, and check claims against their evidence.
  6. Explain intersectionality using Crenshaw's analysis, and break down data so that disadvantage where characteristics cross is not hidden.
  7. Interpret race equality data, including the NHS WRES and Welsh evidence, to distinguish representation from fairness.
  8. Judge apparently competing rights through proportionality, using the Eweida case, rather than by ranking characteristics.
