When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers, HR, service designers and senior leaders in councils, the NHS, housing, police, fire and charities in Wales and England.

Overview

This full-day Immerse covers equality, diversity and inclusion from first principles to lasting practice. It opens with the core concepts, the Equality Act 2010, the Public Sector Equality Duty, the Welsh socio-economic duty, the law in motion to 2026 and the evidence on bias. It then works through the protected characteristics, from intersectionality and race equality to equal pay and religion or belief. Disability awareness follows, from the social model to adjustments, hidden conditions and neurodiversity. It closes with accessible design, inclusive leadership, what makes EDI stick and the Windrush, London Fire Brigade and Yorkshire cricket cases.

Aims

This full-day Immerse aims to develop leaders who treat fairness as how decisions get made rather than as a department. It builds legal confidence, the judgement to read equality data honestly, the practical skill to remove barriers and design accessible services, and the leadership to build cultures where inclusion lasts beyond any individual.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Apply equality law and the public sector duties with confidence in everyday decisions.
  2. Design services and workplaces that remove barriers for disabled and neurodivergent people.
  3. Lead cultures where inclusion is measured honestly and sustained through accountability.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish equality, equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, and explain why each can be achieved without the others.
  2. Apply sections 158 and 159 to plan positive action that stays lawful and avoids positive discrimination.
  3. Plan an equality impact assessment that starts while options are open, uses evidence and engagement, and changes the decision where needed.
  4. Apply process design, including structured interviews, agreed criteria, independent scoring and accountability, and check claims against their evidence.
  5. Explain institutional racism using the Macpherson definition, focusing on what systems produce rather than what individuals intend.
  6. Plan and hold an adjustment conversation that removes barriers quickly, records what is agreed in an adjustment passport and is reviewed over time.
  7. Apply the curb-cut effect, the seven principles of universal design and the persona spectrum to a service, building or document you manage.
  8. Judge what turns accepted recommendations into lasting change, including named owners, honest data, independent oversight and fair process for those accused.
