Who It's For
Leaders making values-based decisions under pressure and uncertainty
Overview
When certainty is not coming, leaders need a steady centre. This programme begins inward, with Goleman's emotional intelligence, Schwartz's values theory, character strengths, servant leadership, three ethical lenses and moral courage, then resilience, self-compassion and the imposter phenomenon. It then turns outward to complexity: VUCA, wicked problems, Cynefin and the Stacey Matrix, Heifetz's adaptive challenges, sensemaking, the OODA loop and the pre-mortem, Marquet's leader-leader model and Taleb's antifragility. Together they help leaders stay anchored in values while making sound decisions in uncertain conditions.
Aims
This programme aims to strengthen leaders' self-knowledge and values-based judgement so they can act with integrity and moral courage under pressure, sustain themselves over the long term, and lead teams through complex situations with clarity, honesty and steadiness rather than false certainty.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Distinguish your stated from your revealed values and apply ethical lenses to plan how you would act with moral courage in a real dilemma.
- Diagnose whether a situation is clear, complicated, complex or chaotic and choose decision approaches such as sensemaking, the OODA loop and the pre-mortem.
- Plan how to sustain yourself and lead a team through uncertainty, building resilience, psychological safety and antifragile habits.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Distinguish stated from revealed values and use Goleman's five components of emotional intelligence to assess how you show up under pressure.
- Apply the consequences, duty and character lenses to an ethical dilemma and plan the words you would use to act with moral courage.
- Identify the learnable factors behind resilience, self-compassion and managing the imposter phenomenon, and plan self-leadership strategies to sustain yourself.
- Diagnose whether a situation is clear, complicated, complex or chaotic using VUCA, Cynefin, the Stacey Matrix and the distinction between tame and wicked problems.
- Distinguish technical problems from adaptive challenges and use sensemaking, the OODA loop and the pre-mortem to decide and act under uncertainty.
- Plan how to lead a team through uncertainty by moving information and authority, protecting psychological safety and building antifragile habits.
