When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For

Leaders in public service and beyond seeking rounded, reflective practice

Overview

This programme is a full day exploration of what it means to lead well in public service and beyond. It moves from a century of leadership thought and the disciplines of strategic leadership, through leading self with values, ethics and resilience, into leading through complexity with Cynefin, adaptive challenges and sensemaking. It then turns to leading others, through team development, shared leadership and coaching, and to how leadership flexes across sector, culture and circumstance. A closing compendium of six real leaders, from Nelson Mandela to Sara Blakely, draws the frameworks together into usable judgement.

Aims

This programme aims to develop rounded, reflective leaders who can draw on the best of leadership thinking with judgement, leading themselves, their teams and their organisations through uncertainty while staying anchored in values that hold across contexts and over time.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Compare the major schools of leadership and strategy and choose the lens that a specific leadership or strategic problem calls for.
  2. Apply tools for leading self, teams and change under uncertainty, from emotional intelligence and ethical lenses to Cynefin, shared leadership and the GROW model.
  3. Assess real leadership situations, including your own, using diagnose, decide, distribute and sustain, adapting tactics to context while holding values constant.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how each major school of leadership thought, from trait theory to complexity leadership, responded to the limits of the one before it.
  2. Compare the planning, positioning, emergent and kernel schools of strategy and assess whether a strategy contains a genuine diagnosis, guiding policy and coherent action.
  3. Distinguish stated from revealed values and use Goleman's five components of emotional intelligence to assess how you show up under pressure.
  4. Identify a team's developmental stage and diagnose its dysfunctions from the foundation of trust upward, using Tuckman, Katzenbach and Smith, and Lencioni.
  5. Compare what private, public and social sector organisations optimise for and explain how that changes the way good leadership is expressed.
  6. Use the four questions of diagnose, decide, distribute and sustain to read a real leadership situation, including your own.
