About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders managing service portfolios, objectives and performance reporting

Overview

Many strategies fail not in the writing but in the delivery. This programme follows strategy from choice to action. It begins with the portfolio, using the BCG and GE-McKinsey matrices in public service terms to support honest decisions about many services competing for the same resources. It then designs the cascade from strategy to team objectives, drawing on Objectives and Key Results and the Balanced Scorecard, and introduces Simons' steering control to test whether the assumptions behind a strategy still hold. It closes with Microsoft under Satya Nadella, a council's Section 114 notice and Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan.

Aims

This programme aims to develop leaders who can carry strategy through to delivery and keep it honest over time. It is for those who manage portfolios of services, set objectives and report performance, and who want to make hard prioritisation choices, cascade strategy into real work and adapt when assumptions change.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Assess a portfolio of services using the BCG and GE-McKinsey matrices, scoring honestly and preparing for difficult conversations about priority and exit.
  2. Design a strategy cascade that reaches teams' working objectives, using Objectives and Key Results or a Balanced Scorecard as design aids.
  3. Build steering control into your organisation so that the assumptions behind strategy are tested and problems are escalated rather than only reported.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Describe the four BCG categories and identify the strategic response each one implies.
  2. Apply portfolio tools in a public organisation by translating growth into demand and priority, and share into relative strength.
  3. Distinguish designing a cascade from reporting on it, and apply the three tests of line of sight, being worked to and honest measures.
  4. Use Objectives and Key Results to write an ambitious objective with two to five provable key results that exclude activity.
  5. Distinguish steering control from post-action control and explain why post-action control alone feels reassuring.
  6. Identify which strategic management frameworks were at work in each of the three cases and explain how they interacted.
