Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Senior leaders setting organisational purpose and direction
Overview
A strategic choice is a moment; strategic management is the system that keeps it alive. This programme focuses on the early stages of that system. It places strategic management alongside thinking, leadership and governance, using Wheelen and Hunger's four stage cycle and the corporate, business and functional levels of strategy. It then tests mission, vision and values against Rumelt's warning about fluff and the interchangeability test, with Patagonia as a mission that rules things out. It builds scanning into a habit through PESTLE and a sober view of SWOT, and closes with Ansoff's matrix and the choice to build, buy or partner.
Aims
This programme aims to develop leaders who can set a clear organisational purpose and position it in a changing environment. The shift it seeks is from generic statements and annual scanning exercises to purposeful choices that guide decisions, with continuous attention to context and an explicit view of growth direction and risk.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain the strategic management cycle and the levels of strategy, and name the level at which a given strategic question sits.
- Design or test mission, vision and values statements so that they rule things out and survive a hard, costly decision.
- Use PESTLE, SWOT and Ansoff's matrix to scan your environment continuously and assess growth direction, risk and whether to build, buy or partner.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Distinguish strategic management from strategic thinking, strategic leadership and governance, and identify which kind of problem an organisation is facing.
- Describe the four stages of the strategic management cycle and assess which stage is weakest and least owned in your own organisation.
- Distinguish the different jobs done by a mission, a vision and a set of values, and identify when they have blurred together.
- Apply the interchangeability test to your own organisation's mission statement and use its four steps to begin a rewrite.
- Explain why continuous scanning gives better strategic value than an annual snapshot taken before a strategy day.
- Identify which of Ansoff's four quadrants a growth proposal sits in and explain the risk that direction carries.
