Who It's For
Senior leaders, finance leads and board members accountable for risk
Overview
Owning risk means being ready to explain who pays when it crystallises, and what it is worth. This programme compares public and private sector risk through Thurrock Council, examines reputation as the place every risk eventually shows up, and reads the Global Risks Report 2026 across two horizons. It then sharpens judgement with Kahneman and Tversky's biases and debiasing tools, extends the matrix to opportunity, and puts numbers on uncertainty through expected monetary value, decision trees and Value at Risk. Two capstones, from Volkswagen and FTX to Barings and the Ever Given, test the frameworks against real failures.
Aims
This programme aims to develop leaders who own risk with confidence and humility, weighing threat and opportunity honestly and with equal rigour, reasoning well about probability and value, and protecting public trust when things go wrong by disclosing early and showing visible accountability.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how public sector, reputational and global risks differ from conventional operational risk, and why loud and quiet risks are each easily missed.
- Apply debiasing tools, a two sided risk matrix, expected monetary value and decision trees to make sounder risk decisions under uncertainty.
- Analyse real risk failures and use the capstone toolkits to strengthen how your own organisation categorises, values and owns its risks.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Explain how the consequence of failure, accountability and purpose of risk taking differ between public and private organisations.
- Explain why reputational risk is a consequence rather than a category, and describe its three distinguishing features.
- Analyse a real risk failure by identifying for yourself which frameworks apply and why.
- Identify the availability heuristic, the law of small numbers and authority anchoring in live risk discussions.
- Calculate expected monetary value and build a simple decision tree that includes doing nothing as an option.
- Analyse an operational, a catastrophic and an external risk failure by identifying the frameworks that explain each.
