When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For

Boards and senior leaders taking risk on behalf of the public

Overview

This programme is a full day in depth on strategic risk, built on the view that risk is the price of having objectives. It moves from definitions, ISO 31000, risk culture and Kaplan and Mikes's categories through enterprise risk management, COSO and emerging risk, into practical assessment, risk appetite and the board. It compares public and private sector risk, explores reputation and the Global Risks Report 2026, then sharpens probability judgement, values uncertainty and treats opportunity with the same rigour as threat. Two capstones, spanning Volkswagen, Silicon Valley Bank, FTX, Barings, Deepwater Horizon and the Ever Given, bring it together.

Aims

This programme aims to develop leaders and boards who take risk deliberately rather than avoid it by default, building the culture, frameworks, appetite and judgement to see the whole risk picture and make bets worth taking on behalf of the public.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how risk principles, risk culture, enterprise risk management and COSO combine to give an organisation one coherent risk picture.
  2. Apply practical and quantitative tools, from Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and appetite statements to expected monetary value and a two sided matrix, to real decisions.
  3. Lead board-level ownership of risk, using lessons from major failures to categorise risks, name appetite owners, value the tail and test the three lines.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Define risk, uncertainty, risk appetite and risk register precisely, and explain why risk is the effect of uncertainty on objectives.
  2. Explain what enterprise risk management adds that siloed departmental registers cannot see, including aggregated exposure and cross cutting themes.
  3. Distinguish risk appetite, risk tolerance and risk capacity and explain why a board needs all three.
  4. Explain why reputational risk is a consequence rather than a category, and describe its three distinguishing features.
  5. Identify the availability heuristic, the law of small numbers and authority anchoring in live risk discussions.
  6. Analyse an operational, a catastrophic and an external risk failure by identifying the frameworks that explain each.
