Who It's For
Partnership, commissioning and place leaders in Wales and England
Overview
Systems leadership happens in partnerships, places and long timescales, and it asks a great deal of the people doing it. This programme explores that terrain over a half day. It begins with relational leadership, power and trust through Huxham and Vangen and Adam Kahane, and Collective Impact with its critics. It then sets the Welsh Future Generations Act beside England's integrated care and devolution, introduces Human Learning Systems and relational commissioning, and explores measuring what matters without gaming. It closes with sustaining yourself as a systems leader and three English cases: Wigan, Leeds and Preston.
Aims
The aim is to develop leaders who can build trust across organisations, use the legal and place frameworks around them, and manage through learning rather than control. It is for partnership, commissioning and place leaders in Wales and England who want systems change to last, and who need to sustain themselves while it does.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Build relational habits that strengthen trust and address power in partnerships, and assess Collective Impact critically against your local context.
- Compare Welsh and English frameworks for place and systems working, and design commissioning and measures that support learning and contribution.
- Plan how to sustain yourself as a systems leader and apply lessons from the Wigan, Leeds and Preston cases to your own place.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Explain collaborative advantage and collaborative inertia and identify the four themes of aims, power, trust and membership that make collaboration hard.
- Describe the five conditions of Collective Impact and explain what a credible backbone function does.
- Describe the role of Integrated Care Boards and the main steps in twenty years of English place-based reform.
- Explain the three principles of Human Learning Systems and the familiar management habit each one replaces.
- Explain how Heifetz's productive zone of disequilibrium and Heifetz and Linsky's ideas on hungers, role and self apply to your own leadership.
- Analyse a real case through several systems frameworks at once, including archetypes, leverage points, stocks and flows, and power.
