When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Senior leaders across councils, health, housing and the voluntary sector

Overview

Homelessness, health inequality and community wellbeing will not yield to any one organisation, however capable. This programme is a full day immersion in systems leadership. It builds the grammar of systems thinking, from Meadows's stocks, flows and leverage points to mapping, archetypes and complex adaptive systems, then turns to the practice of leading where nobody is in charge: adaptive work, Theory U, trust and power, and Collective Impact. It grounds this in Welsh law and English place and integrated care, Human Learning Systems and measurement for learning, and closes with sustaining yourself and the Wigan, Leeds and Preston cases.

Aims

This programme aims to develop systems leaders who can see the whole, act in the connections and sustain change over time. It is for senior leaders and partners across councils, health, housing and the voluntary sector who carry responsibility for outcomes no single body controls and who want a coherent, evidence-informed practice for that work.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Diagnose complex public service problems using systems thinking tools, including stocks and flows, mapping, archetypes and leverage points, and explain what they reveal.
  2. Lead adaptive, relational work across organisational boundaries, building trust, handling power and helping partnerships sense and prototype new responses together.
  3. Design arrangements for lasting systems change, using Welsh and English frameworks, Human Learning Systems and learning-focused measures, while sustaining yourself as a leader.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain what a system is, using elements, interconnections, purpose and boundary, and distinguish tame problems from wicked ones.
  2. Describe the six common system archetypes and identify the loops, delays and side effects that drive each one.
  3. Describe the core capabilities, dimensions and disciplines of systems leadership set out by Senge, Hamilton and Kania, Ghate, Lewis and Welbourn, and Senge.
  4. Describe the five conditions of Collective Impact and explain what a credible backbone function does.
  5. Explain the three principles of Human Learning Systems and the familiar management habit each one replaces.
  6. Analyse a real case through several systems frameworks at once, including archetypes, leverage points, stocks and flows, and power.
