Overview and Outcomes.
Overview
Most public service starts from what a place lacks. This module starts from what is already strong, using John McKnight and John Kretzmann's five building blocks of asset-based community development, the difference between asset mapping and stakeholder mapping, French and Raven's bases of power, four models of community leadership and Cormac Russell's account of what an asset-based leader does. It helps you work with a community rather than on it. Most community strategies are produced with real energy and end up as wish lists. This module sets out what turns ambition into delivery: a co-owned vision, a few priorities, a named delivery mechanism and a review cycle. It introduces the Centre for Local Economic Strategies' five pillars of community wealth building and the role of anchor institutions, and examines the Preston Model, including what transfers to other places.
What you'll develop
In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:
- Apply McKnight and Kretzmann's five building blocks to map the assets already present in a place, and distinguish this from stakeholder mapping.
- Identify positional, natural, connector and emergent leaders and explain why referent power is often the strongest influence in a community.
- Assess your own practice against the behaviours of an asset-based leader, including convening rather than delivering and stepping back on purpose.
- Distinguish a wish list from a delivered community strategy using the four requirements of shared vision, narrow priorities, a named delivery mechanism and a review cycle.
- Explain the five pillars of community wealth building and how anchor institutions use procurement and employment as levers.
