About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers and leaders bringing teams, services or organisations together in public and voluntary sector bodies

Overview

Bringing teams, services and organisations together asks leaders to manage themselves first. From the half day Bringing people together, this course starts with Boyatzis and Goleman's competency model, Intentional Change Theory and Susan David's emotional agility, showing when composure is really suppression. It then explores trust and psychological safety through Edmondson's three moves, Coyle's belonging cues, the bystander effect and a contrast between Pixar's Braintrust and Bridgewater's radical transparency. The foundations of partnership working follow, with the continuum from spectator to transform. Finally, it turns to dual concern models of conflict, from Blake and Mouton to Thomas and Kilmann, and Ofsted's response after the death of Ruth Perry.

Aims

The overall aim is to help leaders stay steady under pressure, build the trust that lets bad news and honest disagreement travel, set partnerships on an honest footing, and choose how to meet conflict deliberately rather than by habit, so that people from different teams and organisations can find genuine common ground.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish genuine self-management from suppression, and apply Intentional Change Theory to plan development that starts from your own ideal self.
  2. Use a three question safety audit to assess your team, taking account of the bystander effect and the unequal costs of speaking up.
  3. Compare the dual concern models of conflict, and choose a conflict mode by weighing the stakes and the relationship.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Describe the four internal competencies in Boyatzis and Goleman's model and Susan David's four skills of emotional agility.
  2. Explain what psychological safety is and is not, and how it combines with high standards to create a learning zone.
  3. Explain the working definition of partnering and use four questions to test whether a new partnership is genuinely needed.
  4. Compare the dual concern models and choose a conflict mode by weighing the stakes and the relationship.
  5. Apply Intentional Change Theory to plan development that starts from your own ideal self rather than from compliance with an imposed plan.
  6. Apply Edmondson's three moves and Coyle's three skills to build safety and belonging in your own team.
  7. Identify where a partnership sits on the continuum from spectator to transform and recognise the common mistakes the continuum exposes.
  8. Assess the evidence on the Thomas-Kilmann and Rahim instruments and use their results appropriately.
