When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Senior leaders in housing, homelessness, health, social care and the voluntary sector

Overview

A settled home is where safety, recovery and dignity can begin. The second part of the flagship Health, care and home starts with Housing First, from Sam Tsemberis to Finland, and trauma-informed and psychologically informed services, then housing with care, dual regulation and a housing association's stakeholders. Sandra Bloom's Sanctuary Model and Baljeet Sandhu's three forms of expertise frame trauma-informed organisations and lived experience leadership. Safeguarding follows, with information sharing, the Child Practice Review after the death of Logan Mwangi and the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. Its final part covers working across the system, staff wellbeing, complex adaptive systems, what systems leaders do, and systems leadership in Wales and England.

Aims

Everything here is designed to help leaders shape services that feel safe to people who have lived with trauma, share information and learn well after harm, support the staff who carry this work, and lead partnerships that nobody controls by shaping conditions rather than dictating outcomes.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Assess whether a service is true to the Housing First principles, and review how its rules and venues affect people's sense of safety.
  2. Plan how your organisation will read, test, change and share the learning from safeguarding reviews so that practice genuinely changes.
  3. Use simple rules, enabling constraints and the notice, amplify, dampen cycle to shape conditions in a system you do not control.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how Housing First differs from the staircase model, and why it treats a home as a foundation for recovery rather than a reward.
  2. Distinguish general needs housing, extra care housing and supported living by purpose, population and the support built into the offer.
  3. Describe the five elements of a PIE from the 2012 good practice guide and the five themes of PIE 2.0, including rules, roles and responsiveness.
  4. Distinguish lived experience, lived expertise and experts by experience, and explain why lived experience is a form of knowledge rather than only feedback.
  5. Explain how domestic abuse and exploitation operate through power and control, using the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 definition and the forms of exploitation the module sets out.
  6. Distinguish vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, burnout and moral injury, and explain why each calls for a different response.
  7. Describe the core capabilities, dimensions and disciplines of systems leadership set out by Senge, Hamilton and Kania, Ghate, Lewis and Welbourn, and Senge.
  8. Describe the role of Integrated Care Boards and the main steps in twenty years of English place-based reform.
