When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For
Team leaders and managers in public service, housing, health and the voluntary sector
Overview
Resilience that rests on individual stamina alone fades. Part of the Immerse Well at work, this Focus opens with Steve Magness's account of real toughness, the difference between empathy and compassion, and Hamel and Valikangas's four challenges of organisational resilience. It then guides you to build a personal resilience plan and a team resilience charter, written in a calm period. It turns inward with Kristin Neff's three components of self-compassion and the inner critic, then sets out Deci and Ryan's Self-Determination Theory, Seligman's PERMA model and the Morningstar case. It concludes with Edmondson on psychological safety, Stasser and Titus's hidden profile problem and simple habits such as a ten-minute huddle.
Aims
The goal is to help leaders share the load in ways that outlast the next crisis: planning resilience with their team while things are calm, quietening an unhelpful inner critic, meeting the needs that sustain motivation and building the trust that lets people speak up and pool what they know.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Compare empathy and compassion and explain why resilience built on individual toughness fades, drawing on Magness and research on organisational resilience.
- Write a team resilience charter with colleagues during a calm period, alongside a personal resilience plan you can use on a hard day.
- Apply psychological safety, the hidden profile problem and a short team huddle to help colleagues share what they know.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Explain why individual resilience work is incomplete on its own and distinguish Magness's real toughness from the appearance of strength.
- Assess your own resilience across the six areas and identify your largest gap, testing your score with someone who will be honest with you.
- Describe Neff's three components of self-compassion and distinguish self-compassion from self-pity, excuse making and lowered standards.
- Explain Self-Determination Theory's three basic needs and identify what it looks like when each goes unmet.
- Explain Edmondson's definition of psychological safety and use the standards and safety matrix to place your team.
- Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
- Distinguish empathy from compassion and use small visible actions to support others in a way you can sustain.
- Plan a personal resilience plan built from your largest gap, with a genuine recovery practice and a check-in partnership, and test it against four questions.
