When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Content Note.

This topic is about mental health at work. Part 3, Safe to Speak, Safe to Seek Help, talks about suicide and how to respond when someone is in crisis. It follows the Samaritans' guidance on talking about suicide safely and gives no detail of methods. Take it at your own pace, pause whenever you need to, and come back to it later if that helps.

If you need to talk to someone now, call Samaritans free on 116 123, any time, day or night. For urgent mental health help, call NHS 111 (in Wales press 2, in England choose option 2; in Scotland NHS 24 is also on 111). In Northern Ireland, call Lifeline on 0808 808 8000. If a life is at risk, call 999.

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers and leaders responsible for people

Overview

How work is designed and led is the biggest lever a manager holds over whether people can be well and do good work. Well at work starts with Keyes' dual continua model and the six HSE Management Standards, then moves through noticing and starting a conversation, the Equality Act and reasonable adjustments, absence and returning to work, stigma and psychological safety, and responding with care when someone is in crisis. Resilience is treated as more than stamina, with Coutu's building blocks, Neff's self-compassion, Self-Determination Theory and a practical resilience plan. Team trust and communication complete the picture, alongside burnout and looking after yourself.

Aims

This programme aims to develop managers and leaders who build workplaces where people can be well, speak openly and do good work, and who look after themselves while they do it. It combines legal confidence, humane conversations and good work design so that wellbeing becomes part of everyday leadership rather than an occasional initiative.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how work design, culture and management practice affect mental health, using the HSE Management Standards and current evidence on wellbeing.
  2. Hold supportive conversations, make reasonable adjustments and manage absence and return to work in ways that are lawful, timely and humane.
  3. Build team conditions of trust, psychological safety and sustainable resilience while protecting your own wellbeing as a leader.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain the dual continua model and why the absence of a diagnosis is not the same as being well.
  2. Identify changes in work, behaviour, energy and relationships that may signal someone is struggling, without attempting a diagnosis.
  3. Distinguish public stigma, self-stigma and structural stigma, and explain how label avoidance keeps people silent.
  4. Describe the pathway from pressure to strain to burnout and identify Maslach and Leiter's three dimensions of burnout.
  5. Distinguish wellbeing as a state, resilience as a capacity and adaptability as a skill, and explain why each needs a different intervention.
  6. Explain why individual resilience work is incomplete on its own and distinguish Magness's real toughness from the appearance of strength.
  7. Explain Self-Determination Theory's three basic needs and identify what it looks like when each goes unmet.
  8. Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
