About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Resilience that relies on individual stamina alone fades, and can quietly shift responsibility onto the people absorbing a structural problem. This module draws on Steve Magness's account of real toughness, the difference between empathy and compassion, Hamel and Valikangas's four challenges of organisational resilience, and future skills evidence from the World Economic Forum and Google's Project Oxygen. Understanding resilience does not by itself change what happens on a difficult Thursday; a written, tested plan does. This module draws together the programme so far, introduces six areas of resilience to score honestly, including recovery and Seligman's explanatory style, and guides you to build a personal resilience plan from your largest gap and a team resilience charter written in a calm period, avoiding four common pitfalls.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain why individual resilience work is incomplete on its own and distinguish Magness's real toughness from the appearance of strength.
  2. Distinguish empathy from compassion and use small visible actions to support others in a way you can sustain.
  3. Apply Hamel and Valikangas's four challenges as practical questions about your own organisation, identifying where the political challenge is likely to stall renewal.
  4. Assess your own resilience across the six areas and identify your largest gap, testing your score with someone who will be honest with you.
  5. Plan a personal resilience plan built from your largest gap, with a genuine recovery practice and a check-in partnership, and test it against four questions.
