When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview

Teams learn only when it is safe to speak. This module sets out Amy Edmondson's definition of psychological safety, the standards and safety matrix, and her hospital study in which the better units reported more errors. It distinguishes competence trust from character trust, drawing on Covey, describes Edmondson's three moves for leaders, and separates the evidence from the myths, including the idea that safe means soft. Most teams are not short of knowledge; the difficulty is getting it heard. This module covers Stasser and Titus's hidden profile problem, Woolley's collective intelligence c factor and its critics, and Pentland's energy, engagement and exploration. It then borrows tools from safety-critical teams, including SBAR and closed-loop communication, examines the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, and offers a ten-minute team huddle.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain Edmondson's definition of psychological safety and use the standards and safety matrix to place your team.
  2. Interpret error, incident and complaint data with the lessons of Edmondson's hospital study in mind.
  3. Apply Edmondson's three moves, set the stage, invite participation and respond productively, while keeping standards high.
  4. Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
  5. Describe the evidence on collective intelligence and Pentland's three patterns, including the limits of that evidence.
