When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For
Aspiring and new managers from councils, health and housing bodies and the voluntary sector
Overview
Before managing anyone else, a leader needs a steady relationship with their own reactions, power and response to change. Part of the Immerse Getting ready to lead, this Focus opens with a genuine debate about emotion, setting Paul Ekman's classical theory against Lisa Feldman Barrett's constructed emotion and introducing emotional granularity. It works through self-awareness and self-management with Boyatzis and Goleman, Intentional Change Theory and Susan David's emotional agility, then turns to French and Raven's bases of power and Weber's types of authority. It ends with resilience through change, drawing on William Bridges, Seligman's three Ps and Haidt's Rider and Elephant, and Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness with four practical techniques.
Aims
Above all, it seeks to build steadiness from the inside out: naming feelings with more precision, keeping composure without suppressing it, understanding and using influence ethically, and having practical ways to stay grounded when change arrives, so future managers are ready before the role asks it of them.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Use emotional granularity to name what you feel with more precision, drawing on the debate between classical and constructed theories of emotion.
- Identify the bases of power and forms of authority you hold and use influence ethically rather than relying on position alone.
- Apply Bridges' transition model, Seligman's three Ps and practical mindfulness techniques to stay steady through personal and organisational change.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Compare Ekman's classical theory of emotion with Barrett's theory of constructed emotion and identify where they genuinely disagree and where they agree.
- Describe the four internal competencies in Boyatzis and Goleman's model and Susan David's four skills of emotional agility.
- Distinguish influence, power and authority, and identify which of French and Raven's six bases of power you and others are drawing on.
- Use the 4 R's, the change curve and Bridges' transition model to name and normalise reactions to change, including time spent in the Neutral Zone.
- Explain Kabat-Zinn's definition of mindfulness and distinguish it from relaxation, emptying the mind and escapism.
- Explain the refractory period and apply it to handle a tense conversation by pausing and returning to the substance rather than arguing louder.
- Apply Intentional Change Theory to plan development that starts from your own ideal self rather than from compliance with an imposed plan.
- Compare Weber's traditional, charismatic and rational-legal authority and assess the risk of an organisation depending on charismatic authority.
