About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Most people meet change as something that happens to them. This module offers five practical models for what change does to people and what helps: the 4 R's of resilience, the Kubler-Ross change curve, William Bridges' transition model and Neutral Zone, Martin Seligman's three P's of explanatory style, and Jonathan Haidt's Rider and Elephant, drawn together in the HOPE model. A resilience model only helps if you can use it in the middle of a difficult day. This module sets out Jon Kabat-Zinn's definition of mindfulness and its attitudinal foundations, three researched mechanisms, and a window of tolerance adapted from Dan Siegel, with four practical techniques. The General Mills case, led by Janice Marturano, shows mindfulness treated as a trainable leadership capability.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Use the 4 R's, the change curve and Bridges' transition model to name and normalise reactions to change, including time spent in the Neutral Zone.
  2. Assess an explanation of a setback against Seligman's three P's and revise it towards accurate rather than merely positive thinking.
  3. Apply the Rider and Elephant and the HOPE model to plan support that addresses the emotional mind as well as the rational one.
  4. Explain Kabat-Zinn's definition of mindfulness and distinguish it from relaxation, emptying the mind and escapism.
  5. Describe the window of tolerance and use techniques such as breath-based grounding and the deliberate pause to stay within it.
