About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Influence, power and authority are often used interchangeably, yet confusing them is one of the costliest mistakes a leader can make. This module sets out French and Raven's six bases of power, Weber's three types of legitimate authority and the position, push and pull strategies, alongside the ethical line between persuasion, coercion and manipulation. The negotiated end of apartheid by Mandela and de Klerk shows influence outweighing formal power.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish influence, power and authority, and identify which of French and Raven's six bases of power you and others are drawing on.
  2. Compare Weber's traditional, charismatic and rational-legal authority and assess the risk of an organisation depending on charismatic authority.
  3. Apply position, push and pull strategies, and use the disclosure test to distinguish persuasion from coercion and manipulation.
