Who It's For

People thinking about their first management role

Overview

Moving into management is one of the biggest changes in a working life, and it goes better with preparation. Getting ready to lead is for people considering their first management role. It explores what changes, using Katz's three skill model and Watkins' first ninety days, and how management identity and confidence are formed. Emotional intelligence runs through the day, from Salovey and Mayer's four-branch model and Goleman to self-awareness and self-management. It adds French and Raven's bases of power, a century of management thought from Taylor to Mintzberg, personal resilience through change, mindfulness, and how trust and good communication make a team work.

Aims

This programme aims to help people make an informed, confident decision about stepping into management and to prepare themselves well if they do. It develops self-awareness, emotional intelligence and personal resilience alongside a realistic picture of what the role asks, so that the move into management starts from strength.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain what changes when you become a manager and assess your own readiness, motivations and development priorities for the role.
  2. Use emotional intelligence, self-awareness and resilience practices to manage yourself well through the uncertainty of a career transition.
  3. Describe how power, trust and communication shape a team, and plan how you would build credibility and relationships in a first management role.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain why becoming a manager is a change of job, and name the three things that change on day one.
  2. Describe your current management brand in observable behaviours and choose one visible change to build the brand you want.
  3. Describe the three origins of emotional intelligence and distinguish the ability, trait and competency models by the question each one answers and how each is measured.
  4. Compare Ekman's classical theory of emotion with Barrett's theory of constructed emotion and identify where they genuinely disagree and where they agree.
  5. Distinguish influence, power and authority, and identify which of French and Raven's six bases of power you and others are drawing on.
  6. Explain Kabat-Zinn's definition of mindfulness and distinguish it from relaxation, emptying the mind and escapism.
  7. Explain the main schools of management thought, from Taylor and Fayol to human relations and Wiseman's Multipliers, and what each adds to a manager's diagnostic kit.
  8. Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
