When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Team leaders, coaches and OD practitioners in councils, housing, health and the voluntary sector

Overview

Coaching one person and sending them back into an unchanged system achieves surprisingly little. From the Immerse More than the sum of its parts, this Focus begins with hidden dynamics: Bion's basic assumption groups, social loafing and diffusion of responsibility, with Liverpool City Council's recovery. It explores leading teams through the functional leadership model, Pearce and Conger on shared leadership, Hackman's authority matrix, Robert Kelley's follower styles and the All Blacks. Team coaching, Hackman and Wageman on timing and Michael West's reflexivity cycle follow. Last, it looks at the Tavistock tradition, from primary task and boundary to the organisation in the mind, and Avanti's own approach to group coaching.

Aims

Its central aim is to help leaders and coaches see the system around a team before intervening: noticing what a team is avoiding, choosing the right moment to coach, sharing leadership deliberately and building habits of reflection that last beyond any single session.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Identify what a team is avoiding, using Bion's basic assumption groups, social loafing and diffusion of responsibility.
  2. Use Hackman's authority matrix and Hackman and Wageman's theory of timing to decide how and when to intervene with a team.
  3. Apply Tavistock concepts such as primary task, boundary and the organisation in the mind to coach a team as a system.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Identify Bion's basic assumptions of dependency, fight-flight and pairing when they appear in a group.
  2. Use the functional team leadership model to identify which leadership functions your team is missing.
  3. Distinguish group coaching from team coaching and explain why design comes before coaching.
  4. Describe Edmondson's team learning behaviours and West's team reflexivity cycle.
  5. Describe Bion's three basic assumptions and recognise them in groups and in the coaching relationship.
  6. Distinguish individual, team, group and systemic coaching and choose where the most useful leverage lies.
  7. Explain how social loafing, the sucker effect, diffusion of responsibility and social defences quietly reduce team performance.
  8. Place your team on Hackman's authority matrix and explain when shared leadership works best.
