About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

The Tavistock tradition treats every coaching conversation as taking place inside a system, with anxiety beneath the task. This module traces the tradition and separates group relations from T-groups, then covers Wilfred Bion's basic assumptions, primary task, boundary, role and the organisation in the mind, transference and social defences, Isabel Menzies Lyth's nursing study, and what a systems-psychodynamic coach does differently. Coaching one person and sending them back into an unchanged system can achieve surprisingly little. This module compares individual, team and systemic coaching, and covers Peter Hawkins's five disciplines, David Clutterbuck's definition of team coaching, Hackman and Wageman's theory and timing, the senior leadership teams research, Avanti's approach to group coaching, and Gestalt and narrative coaching.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Describe Bion's three basic assumptions and recognise them in groups and in the coaching relationship.
  2. Use the concepts of primary task, boundary, role and the organisation in the mind to explore a coachee's situation.
  3. Explain transference, countertransference and social defences, using the Menzies Lyth nursing study as an example.
  4. Distinguish individual, team, group and systemic coaching and choose where the most useful leverage lies.
  5. Apply Hawkins's five disciplines and Hackman and Wageman's conditions and timing to a team you lead or support.
